AUTHENTIC CHARLESTON SWEETGRASS BASKETS
Charleston
Samplers is pleased to offer you the unique sweetgrass basket creations of Mrs.
Dorothy Washington and her family. Available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes
and styles, a Charleston sweetgrass basket is a special gift for yourself or a
loved one, and is an heirloom that will last for generations.
Sweetgrass basketmaking is a Charleston tradition, and is the only place where this art form is still practiced. This style of basket weaving was brought to the Lowcountry by slaves from West Africa over 300 years ago. Today, it is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States. From the days of flourishing rice plantations of the Old South, these baskets have always been in great demand. Constructed from sweetgrass found in Lowcountry marshes, palmetto fronds, bulrush and pine needles, sweetgrass baskets are perfect for floral arrangements, serving bread and fruit, or storing and displaying linens. Most Lowcountry homes can boast one (if not several) sweetgrass baskets as part of its dιcor.
We invite you to compare our prices to any vendor in downtown Charleston. We think you'll agree that Charleston Samplers offers outstanding values for authentic sweetgrass baskets.
Because sweetgrass baskets are handmade, no two are exactly the same. The slight variations make each a unique treasure.
